Scoliosis physical therapy in Miami, built around your curve

Curve-specific evaluation and treatment for kids and adults — from a practice where scoliosis is the specialty, not a side service.

Scoliosis is defined as a sideways curve of the spine — but if you or your child has it, you already know it's more than that. The spine doesn't just bend; it rotates. Ribs shift, shoulders and hips un-level, breathing changes. No two curves are the same, which is why generic physical therapy — the kind that hands every scoliosis patient the same stretching sheet — so often disappoints.

At Upright, every session is a private, full-hour one-on-one with a licensed therapist, in a practice founded and led by Dr. Rebeca Correalima — a Doctor of Physical Therapy trained under the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (Schroth-based) — in a studio built for this work: wall bars, mirrors, and time to actually teach you your curve.

Who this is for

  • Kids with idiopathic scoliosis — newly diagnosed, being observed ("wait and see"), or in a brace. This window, while growth remains, is when curve-specific exercise matters most.
  • Adults with scoliosis — long-standing curves causing pain, stiffness, or visible postural change. It is not too late: research shows adults benefit too.
  • Post spinal surgery — recovering strength, mobility, and confidence after fusion or other spinal procedures.
  • Posture problems — kyphosis, forward head, uneven shoulders — treated with the same 3-D, cause-first approach.

What happens at your evaluation

  1. We review your X-rays — Cobb angle, curve type, and (for kids) remaining growth. Send them ahead of your visit if you can.
  2. Posture assessment with photos — your "before" baseline in multiple positions.
  3. You learn your curve — most patients have never had their own X-ray explained to them. You will leave understanding exactly what your spine is doing.
  4. Your plan begins — first curve-specific exercises and the start of your home program.
What to bring: X-rays (or send ahead), a sports bra or swimsuit that shows your spine (no racerbacks), and your brace if you have one.

How we treat scoliosis

Treatment is Schroth-Method based (full explanation here): three-dimensional corrective positions, elongation, de-rotation, and rotational breathing, tailored to your specific curve classification. Depending on your needs, your plan may also include:

  • Bracing guidance — choosing the right brace for your curve type, assessing a brace you already have, and weaning into full-time wear
  • Strength and mobility work for related deficits (tight hamstrings, weak deep neck flexors)
  • Pain management: manual therapy, dry needling, cupping, kinesio taping
  • Ergonomic coaching — sitting posture for school, work, car, and backpack wear
  • A home program you can actually do, progressed toward independence
  • Small-group Schroth classes ($65) — once you've completed a few private sessions and know your corrections, keep momentum and consistency in a group setting

The goals

Stop curve progression — and where possible, avoid fusion surgery. Along the way: better posture, stronger trunk muscles, less pain, improved breathing mechanics, and in many cases a measurable reduction in Cobb angle. Consistency is the multiplier; we build the plan so you can keep it.

Common questions

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No — you can start physical therapy in Florida without a referral. If your insurance requires one for reimbursement, we'll let you know at booking.

Does insurance cover this?

We're out-of-network with all insurers. Schroth uses standard CPT codes, so if your plan covers outpatient PT, you can typically submit our superbill for reimbursement. More on cost & insurance.

How often will we come?

It depends on your curve and goals — set at your evaluation. Many patients transition to mostly-home-program with periodic check-ins.

My teenager was told to "wait and see." Should we?

Observation without exercise means waiting to see if things get worse. Curve-specific exercise during growth is exactly what Schroth was designed for — at minimum, get the curve assessed so you know what you're watching.
